How we made a movie? The Free Outside FKT Story
In this episode, I (Jeff Garmire) share the story of how 'Free Outside' was made. I talk about the challenges, including working with an unprofessional executive producer. We also discusses the process of filming the movie and the difficulties of capturing the essence of the trail while pursuing a record. I share experiences of premiering the movie and marketing it to audiences. I end the episode with a book recommendation and a game for the listeners.

Unexpected Snow, Trudging through a Montana Backpacking Trip
Просмотров 164День назад
I recount a recent backpacking trip in Montana, which did not go according to plan due to unexpected snow and challenging trail conditions. Despite the difficulties, I had an adventure that was epic and beautiful, with stunning views of snowy peaks and fog-filled valleys. Follow along the backpacking trip as I change my original plan and find a campsite in a lower elevation to escape the snow. ...

Great guest.
Hi, U need a attractive RUclips thumbnail designer to grow your views?
If peeing your pants is cool, consider me Miles Davis
Interesting to hear! Thanks for sharing!!
Thank you for sharing this amazing recount of the JMT FKT. Your mental fortitude when dealing with unforeseen obstacles and changes in the plan blows me away! Yes, please, share more of your FKT experiences.
That's no joke! Really powerful!!
Thanks! Fun to relive it a little bit
@@FreeOutside Edited comment. Didn't want any spoilers 🙂
Are your splits on strava or something?
Yeah I believe they are
Loved this one. Can't believe you had rabdo... is the spot with cell service reds meadow?
It’s right in that area! And on mt Whitney
This was an awesome episode - would love to hear you do more of these. The insight of how to take advantage of when you are moving well and how to reset when you are not is really seemingly simple, but also quite deep! Thanks for this one, Legend!
Thank you! I will start diving into more of these efforts.
Hey Jeff, great to see this one. I had a similar experience last year. I Quit my job, and decided to take on the CT. I was mentally broke from a 25 year grind in IT and decided to go after the CT after being inspired by your documentary. I admire and appreciate your story! Next time you are in Denver, it would be awesome to grab a beer with you and Grizzly. One step at a time! Thank you!
Thank you very much and I totally get it. Absolutely let’s when I make it back to Denver
I hiked with Cal for a bit on the PCT in '22. Love that you had him on ❤
Oh yeah he’s such a fun guy!
Geat interview!
Thanks!
Killer interview! 😊😊😊
Thank you!
beautiful, nice fall too
Perfect fall
Great video, Jeff! I finally got out to elevation and snow last weekend where I live. It was a great reset.
Oh yeah! I love the adventure aspect of getting some snow in!
Do you know "the high hiker"? I think he mentioned you in a video. Says he's done 14000 miles in Crocs!
Hah that’s pretty funny, I do not think I know him
Nice and relaxing weekend. Hard to beat that
You got that right!
I , for one am very interested in your exploits, so thank you. Keep on going on
More to come!
Nice to meet you- what a top ~take care.
Thanks!
Dinner delivered itself to you! UberEats of the backcountry
Just joking, just joking
Hah!
That's an amazing experience!
Yeah! It was so cool! They just came down and checked us out before leaving for the night
@@FreeOutside That's really cool! I had a young goat run out to me once in a lightning storm but it quickly turned around when it saw us
@@josephi6916that’s so cool! I’ve had a few wild encounters with them, they are hearty beasts living way out there!
Good advice. Sounds simple but a lot of times we ignore or needs and make things harder
Exactly!
Wow youre brave😭
Adventurous
Pretty interesting! Stay safe out there
Thanks! Crazy how the mind works
Wow, what's up with Backpacker Radio? I listen sometimes, but if that's how they treat their guests...
Yeah pretty weird
Ultrarunning History Podcast has some excellent videos about 6-day racing and WSER history. 5-stars to you both
Oh yeah that pod is really cool! Much more in depth
???????? Nice try on your first video ? Idk what this is supposed to be or why you thought to upload it .
Damn bro you dont gotta violate my man like that ☠️
People are ruthless! Damn let the man be. And yes I would backpack there.
have to agree with the others. what's the point of that comment?
Thank you
Do you hike in your puffy or mostly for camp?
A little in the morning but largely for camp!
@@FreeOutsideThanks! Your video hikes are really impressive. Might do the CT this year trying to figure how much warmth to bring
awesome as always
Thank you very much
Great insight! Thanks Legend
Glad you enjoyed it!
I gotta dash.
Dash away!
I was waiting for the sarcasm, or does glasses Jeff = serious Jeff?
Gotta be serious once in a while so the sarcasm hits harder
Couldn’t have said it better myself
relearning to talk while holding a microphone
You once told me when I asked for some FKT advice for a newbie that I should brush my teeth when I got tired. I actually did it and I’m pretty sure it worked. So I carried my collapsible toothbrush in my shoulder strap and had clean teeth for my hikes/FKT’s.
It really does reset everything and work so well! I need to make a video on more tips and tricks
Can you help me figure out how to register ?
It is a bit of a secret
@@FreeOutside I know.
@@FreeOutside how do I crack the code?
Thanks for sharing your life experiences. This is packed full of well thought out insight and wisdom. Best of success in your future endeavors and stay healthy!
Thank you very much!
On poles - Grindstone 100k 11k of elevation , I’m wondering if really need poles?
On similar courses I have not taken poles. But it depends on what you are comfortable with. Poles burn more calories and make it harder for me to remember to eat (to have a free hand), but they can save the legs with climbing. So if you feel like you don’t get enough climbing in training poles can help
Fun video - I like the topics like fueling and mental tips for running FKTs and Ultras … thanks !
Awesome suggestions!
It's funny. You wearing a dress got me to try ultras. I wanted a sport where people don't take themselves too seriously.
I love that! People need to have more fun with running!
Watched your movie last night 🔥🔥
Awesome! Thank you
hyoh -> fyop (find your own people)
I think that is the key in life!
That was very creative Jeff. Loved the Terminator-esque meme for the AI interviewer, and as always appreciate your humor and transparency. Good luck in 'The Winds' this summer. I've made several trips, and rent a cabin up on Union Pass. Hiking that area is one of the most immersive wilderness experiences. Heal up and get back out there...
Totally! I’m so excited for getting deep into the winds. One of the most immersive spots in the lower 48!
I hope you didn’t get hurt from running in crocs.
Nope! All injuries have come from wearing podiatrist approved shoes
Thanx dude. I have been so interested in your journey and this talk was very informative.
Awesome! Tried to find a fun way to do it
Keep it movin
That’s the name of the game!
